'Civil War Medical Photography' is an early publication from Dr. Burns and the Burns Archive.
It features Civil War medical photographs accompanied by a history of Civil War medical photgraphy.
This pamphlet is a 1983 reprint of Dr. Burns landmark article on Civil War Medical Photography. It was originally issued as part of the now defunct- New York State Journal Of Medicine, Volume 80 No 9. In response to the demand at that time, Dr. Burns privately printed and bound 100 copies of the article. This is one of the original 100.
This work is the only comprehensive treatise on the topic and presents a classification of Civil War medical images. It documents in 27 pages and 42 illustrations the range of Civil War medical photography and contains reproduced pages from the Federal governments original works. These government pages define the styles and types of photographs that the Army Medical Museum sought for its collection.
Dr. Burns article is the classic source on the topic and it has not been surpassed in its comprehensiveness and thoroughness. He explains the differences between images taken before and after the war. Also, how to correctly identify the images.
Dr. Burns reviews various government Civil War medical publications, their production and their relationship to medical photography. He also discusses Confederate Civil War medical photographs. Twenty-nine references are included for further research. This work is a necessity for those interested in the Civil War or medical photography.
