'American Medical Publications' is an early monograph (1981) from Dr. Burns and the Burns Archive.
It provides a checklist of known early medical photographs in published works.

This pamphlet is a 1983 reprint of Dr. Burns’ landmark article on American Medical Publications. It was originally issued as part of the now defunct- New York State Journal Of Medicine, Volume 81 No 8. In response to the demand at that time, Dr. Burns privately printed and bound 100 copies of the article. This is one of the original 100.

This work is the only comprehensive treatise on the topic and presents a classification of American medical photographic publications. It documents in 41 pages and 52 photographs the known medical photographic publications.

This monograph serves as a checklist for researchers, libraries and collectors. Dr. Burns’ article is the classic source on the topic and it has not been surpassed in its comprehensiveness and thoroughness. Since its publication only a handful of additional early medical photographic publications have been discovered.

Dr. Burns reviews the various types and methods of photographic reproduction in books. A classification is presented of 7 catagories of medical publications and a synopsis of major works are presented. A method for analyzing medical photographs is given. Thirty-eight references are sited.

This work is a necessity for those interested in early medical photographic publications and the use of photography in printed works.
